Costa Rica’s impressive range of habitats captivates bird and wildlife photographers. Birdwatchers, in particular, flock to see its vibrant toucans, colorful parrots, and the world-renowned resplendent quetzal. With over 900 bird species, it’s a hot spot for avian photography. However, the frogs shouldn’t be overlooked! The country is also famous for its variety of colorful amphibians, including the red-eyed tree frog, poison dart frogs, and translucent glass frogs. Macro photographers often seek out these species near rivers, where they can add dramatic flair to their shots.

Popular Destinations for Nature Explorers

  • Corcovado National Park: Located on the Osa Peninsula, it’s one of the most bio diverse places on Earth, home to all four monkey species, big cats, and over 400 bird species.
  • Monteverde Cloud Forest Reserve: Famous for sightings of the Resplendent Quetzal, this misty forest is rich in biodiversity.
  • Tortuguero National Park: Known for its nesting sea turtles, this area is also great for spotting monkeys, birds, and caimans.
  • La Selva Biological Station: A haven for birdwatchers, with chances to see a wide range of species in their natural habitat.

Birds & Wildlife in Costa Rica

The country is home to over 900 species of birds. Further, it includes world renown species.

  • Resplendent Quetzal: A symbol of Costa Rican wildlife, this stunning bird with its iridescent green plumage and long tail feathers is found in cloud forests.
  • Scarlet Macaw: Large parrots are often seen in pairs or flocks, especially in the Pacific coastal areas.
  • Toucan Species: Oversized, colorful beaks, seen in many parts of the country.
  • Hummingbirds: Over 50 species with unique colors and patterns, found flitting among flowers.

Wildlife can be found most everywhere or concentrated in particular regions:

  • Sloths: Both the three-toed and two-toed sloths are commonly seen blending in with the foliage.
  • Monkeys: Four species of monkeys: Howler monkeys, Spider monkeys, Capuchin monkeys, and the Squirrel monkeys. Each has distinct behaviors and habitats.
  • Big Cats: Though elusive, Costa Rica is home to jaguars, ocelots, and pumas. The Osa Peninsula is one of the best places to spot these majestic predators.
  • Reptiles and Amphibians: From the iconic Red-eyed Tree Frog to various species of lizards and snakes.
